Obituary:
Paul Elliott Rummell (1949-2014) – Paul passed away peacefully on Sun
Nov 2, 2014, from complications as a result of a bone marrow stem cell
transplant. Paul was the beloved husband of Diane Shrott, loving and
proud father of Kristin and Sonja Rummell, dear step-father of Steven
and Margot Kraft, cherished son of the late Jane and James Rummell and
devoted son-in-law of Syd and Honey Shrott. Paul was born September 18th
1949 in Chicago and grew up in Los Angeles. He graduated at Westmount
College in Santa Barbara with a BA in Economics and Business and
obtained his Masters of Economics at Universitat Wien in Vienna Austria.
Paul was ahead of his time when it came to technology. He was a leading
IT professional in North America and had over 30 years experience as an
IT strategist, innovator and project manager in the financial services,
e-government and health care sectors. He had an insatiable appetite for
both acquiring and sharing knowledge, which made him a great mentor and
colleague. Throughout his career, Paul was selected as one of Canada's
30 top technology professionals, testified on 'Establishing a Federal
CIO' for the U.S. Government, House of Representatives, advised on
Technology Policies for the U.S. Controller General and U.S. Congress
and received a Lifetime Career Achievement in Technology. One of his
proudest accomplishments was being the first CIO for the Government of
Canada. He was an extremely insightful and visionary leader in the
business technology field. As a business colleague said “Paul was
quietly brilliant, strategic, articulate, and an honest person with a
sense of integrity rare in business.”
As a result of his career he also had the opportunity to travel around
the world. Both professionally and personally Paul loved a challenge. He
put his heart and soul into everything he set his mind to: from
building a home from the ground up to doing endless handyman projects
with such precision to fixing endless computer glitchs for friends and
family. He also loved the outdoors whether he was running up the Grouse
Grind, kayaking on the Pacific Ocean, enjoying the fall colours at the
cottage in Muskoka, Ontario or sitting on a beach in Mexico.
Paul will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be made
to Princess Margaret Hospital at 416-946-6560 or Angiosarcoma Awareness
Inc. at cureasc.org (in the U.S.)
I remember Paul well and now know why he didn't make the last
few reunions or birthday bash! I remember running many laps with him
during track training....
Ironically, my father-in-law was head of the Economics department at
Westmont College at the same time Paul attended, so I know they are
sharing stories right now. One of the points about Paul in his obit is
that he was "kind and honest". For those who don't know, Westmont is a
Christian college, where ethics and morals are not only important, but
still taught.
Deb and I are attending the Westmont Christmas concert tomorrow
evening (12/6/14), so I will let them know of his passing if they don't
already.
When Debbie got home from work, I told her I had sent her
brothers a note about Paul's passing, as I thought one of them may have
known him....she said "oh, Paul came to our house for dinner a few times
while at Westmont"....very small world!
